"DIE HARD" is a miracle baby. There was a delay in picking up 4 receipt momma cows from TransOva due to scheduling issues that resulted in them being picked up less than a week before the calves were due! The 24' gooseneck already had the front two sections full so we had to pack these 4 receipt mama cows into the rear 8' section for an all night 24 hour 1400 mile drive from Iowa to New York. The four 9 month pregnant, fancy TransOva angus receipt cows were packed in tight. It was a long stressful haul for all of us to say the least! When we opened the rear gate of the trailer, a half stomped to death wagyu calf with swollen legs rolled out onto the ground as the 4 mama cows trampled over him stampeding off the trailer. The calf was badly hurt with sore legs and a crushed tail and wouldn't suck or nurse. We called the vet over who doctored him up with many shots and ran the mother into the chute to hand milk for colostrum. Open range angus cows don't like getting hand milked for the first time just after being separated from their newborn calf after a 1400 mile haul...
We felt the calf's head and he was as bald as bald could be...no horn buds, scurs or bumps of any kind so we knew he was polled. We hand milked his mom and tube fed him trying not to get our hopes up for his prognosis, but then to our surprise, the little trampled calf with sore swollen legs, a cracked tail, and bald as can be stood up and walked (more like limped) within minutes! Within a week or two his crushed tail fell off, his swollen legs recovered and "DIE HARD" was running around the pasture like any other spring calf.

"BRUCE WILLIS" had it alot easier than his brother DIE HARD as he was born on a beautiful spring day in the middle of a beautiful green pasture a week or so after the trip back from Iowa picking up his receipt mama. We immediately felt his head and knew he was polled as well. Since we already had a "DIE HARD" it made sense to name his bald brother "BRUCE WILLIS."

"G.I. JANE" was a fighter from the start! A flushmate to DIE HARD and BRUCE WILLIS, she was a bit unlucky as her receipt mama kind of took off on her when she was born and she was lost in a swampy area of high growth vegetation and we couldn't find her for a couple days and never saw the mother try to find her. When we finally found her she was weak, couldn't stand and looked skinny, dehydrated and emaciated enough that we assumed she probably never even had her first meal. We immediately felt her head for horn buds and once we knew she was polled we immediately caught her wild open range receipt mama and ran her through the chute to hand milk for colostrum kicking like a mule the whole time. The things you do for 99.41% PB polled Kenhanafuji x Itozuru Doi 151 x Fukutsuru 068 daughters!! lol;) After tube feeding her a couple days leaving her in a pen with mama she recovered 100% and was feeding directly off the mother normally and running around with the rest of the spring calves in the pasture. What better name for her to go along with DIE HARD and BRUCE WILLIS than G.I. JANE!!!
The three polled animals above are all sired by Kenhanafuji, one of the most highly sought after original import sires in history due to his extreme phenotype, marbling, growth, milk, and heterosis being the only son or daughter ever exported out of the great "Hanafuji cow," his nationally famous Japanese dam. Kenhanafuji gives the world outside Japan a whole new powerhouse cow family's genetics via the Hanafuji cow! Kenhanfuji's sire Itohana was the highest marbling bull of Japan twice! This was an astounding feat for Itohana because he was ZERO Tajima! Imagine how all the Kobe beef breeders in Hyogo felt when a much thicker, nicer looking Shimane x Kedaka bull beat all their ugly little high Tajimas in MARBLING!! AND TWO YEARS IN A ROW!!! Maybe this is why a japanese investor named Eiji Funatsuki who owns a farm in Hyogo, Japan where Kobe beef comes from paid $150,000 for Kenhanafuji soon as he set foot on the ground in the USA...making him the highest selling black wagyu bull of all time, not even counting for inflation...
With such legendary outcross blood coursing through their veins, DIE HARD, BRUCE WILLIS, and G.I. JANE (Their polled flushmate sister) are upgrading polled programs around the world, but their unique value to the polled wagyu industry goes much farther than that...
You see, most of the polled genetics you see out there today have many branches of their pedigrees going back to non DNA verified purebred animals. There is no guarantee that the pedigree from that point further back is accurate other than the word and accuracy of Breeder's record keeping decades ago...
Many of us who have purchased purebred cattle over the years found out that oftentimes those records were inaccurate when hair was pulled and sent in to verify the sires...we have personally had a majority of the purebred cows we purchased not DNA verify to the sires that their pedigrees say they are sired by...
You see, when they first imported two black wagyu bulls (Mt Fuji & Mazda) and two Akaushi bulls (Judo & Rueshaw) into America in the mid 70's there was no DNA verification available at that time. It wasn't until the mid '90's when the second wave of imports entered America that DNA verification began to be a requirement to register animals, and even then it was only required for 100% pure fullblood animals and not required to register <100% purebreds until 2017. Many purebred operations had been breeding up from Mazda, Mt Fuji, Judo and Rueshaw for decades before the first 100% pure fullblood females ever left Japan in the '90's...there was undoubtedly mistakes made over the years as many of us who bought out herds of these purebreds have had many of them not test out to what their pedigrees say they should...the higher percentage pure the animals were the higher dollar amount they sold for...lots of pressure on breeders to err on the side of higher percent pure is better....
We've all had it happen...bulls jump fences...weanlings left together too long breed each other...what we thought was an ET calf is actually sired by the clean up herd bull...straws of semen are mixed up...embryos and receipts get mixed up...even the most meticulous of breeders can make mistakes...and sometimes make them on purpose or out of frustration: "I need to pay bills, she looks more like a Michifuku heifer to me anyway!" wink, wink, nod, nod...
Whereas the pedigrees of most other polled wagyu genetics around the world goes back to non-DNA verified animals in several legs of their pedigrees, there is only ONE animal in the entire three generation pedigree of DIE HARD, BRUCE WILLIS and G.I.
